Picture from Lydekker, The Royal Natural History "In 1884, Samuel Garman formally described their species, and named it Chlamydoselachus anguineus ('snake-like shark with frills') Referred to in popular parlance as the frilled shark, its name alludes to two of its most conspicuous features. First, its body--measuring up to six and a half feet in total length--is extremely slender, genuinely affording it an unexpectedly snake-like appearance. Secondly, the six gills on each side of its throat have frilly edges, a unique deature among modern-day sharks but exhibited by various primitive sharks dating back almost 400 million years to Devonian times. A deepwater species that prey upon octopuses and squids, the frilled shark has a wide distribution, inhabiting the Atlantic Ocean and both sides of the Pacific.
